Role of PEEP
In NIV

PEEP is used in both CPAP and BiPAP.

  • Positive End Expiratory Pressure (PEEP) or Expiratory Positive Airway Pressure (EPAP) 1 
  • Positive pressure applied to the airways and maintained at the end of expiration
  • Prevents or minimises alveolar collapse
  • Increases lung volume
  • Improves alveolar gas exchange
  • Improves oxygenation
  • PEEP needs a closed circuit with no leaks to the atmosphere or the pressure in the alveoli is lost1,2
  • PEEP can have side effects on organs (eg, heart, kidneys etc.) due to raised intrathoracic pressure and can cause complications such as a pneumothorax (collapsed lung)1
