NIV is used to treat patients with various forms of respiratory failure.
It has changed the management of these conditions, as it decreases the need for invasive mechanical ventilation and its associated complications.1

NIV is a form of ventilatory support.
It is delivered without the use of an invasive endotracheal tube or a tracheostomy through a nasal mask, face mask or hood, using either a single-limb or a double-limb ventilator circuit.1,2

In most cases, NIV relies on the patient being able to breathe spontaneously.
When the patient takes a breath in, the NIV machine delivers positive pressure that allows the lungs to open and expand, enabling them to fill with oxygenated air. This facilitates gas exchange and prevention of airway collapse during expiration.1
