Characteristics:

  • Less constricting
  • Ability to eat, drink and expectorate
  • Better suited to long-term use

Uses:

  • Infrequently used in acute respiratory failure (ARF) due to prevalence of mouth breathing1

Characteristics:

  • Tight fitting and can be constricting
  • Can cause pressure ulcers
  • Hard to talk, eat, drink and expectorate

Uses:

  • Is most commonly used in ARF as does not lose pressure via mouth or nose breathing1

Characteristics:

  • Constricting but avoids skin contact with tight mask1
  • Studies show a hood/helmet maybe more patient tolerant1,2
  • Increases dead space and may affect CO2 and breathing1

Uses:

  • Typically used more for CPAP
